1. a series of postures, static in nature, that are executed with the use of the body or some part of it,
2. a series of biomechanical postures, absent of technical intent, that are symbolic of keeping one's body or some part of it from harm,
3. a series of biomechanical postures that are used in conjunction with the intent to keep one's body or some part of it from harm,
4. an expression that refers to illusionary guarding positions, real guarding positions, deceptive guarding positions, and veiled guarding positions
